How to Test a Trading Bot

Separate software checks from strategy evaluation. Software can follow its specification correctly while the strategy still loses money. A useful evaluation examines both behaviour and financial risk.

Document the historical test

Record the tested period, market data source, starting balance, spreads, commissions and strategy settings. Keep the report so another reviewer can understand the assumptions. cTrader supports historical cBot testing and reports equity and trade statistics.

Evaluate beyond the best result

Compare losing periods, drawdown, trade count, costs and open exposure. Test data outside the period used to choose settings. A high return from one selected period can hide sensitivity to costs or market conditions.

Forward-test on a broker demo

Observe fresh market conditions with virtual funds. Check connection failures, restart behaviour and position limits alongside trading results. Demo execution can differ from a funded account; it does not establish future returns.

PREPARE YOUR ENQUIRY

Make the first conversation useful.

  • Which bot and platform are being evaluated?
  • Which test reports and assumptions are available?
  • What behaviour should the system demonstrate before acceptance?
